"Where The Horses Are Forward" by Corwin Knapp Linson. Signed, titled, and dated 1897. Watercolor, gouache, and graphite sgraffito illustration likely for "The Red Badge of Courage" a civil war novella by Stephen Crane, which Linson illustrated, showing the horses quarters in the SS Massachusetts as noted lower right. Presented matted and in a carved gilt frame. Image size: 7.5" x 9", overall dimensions: 14" x 15".
Corwin Knapp Linson, 1864-1959, was an american artist and illustrator born in Brooklyn who primarily resided in NJ later in life.
Linson studied at Academy Julian and Ecole des Beaux Arts, Paris (1st prize in composition, also honorable mention in composition and drawing). He was a pupil of Gerome and Lefebvre and Jean Paul Laurens.
Linson was a member of the National Academy of Design., New York Water Color Club, New York Water Color Society and exhibited extensively. He also provided illustrations for writings on the condition of coal miners and the working class. less
