This " The Fauve Landscape " rare vintage 1990 first edition landmark volume hardcover French Modern Art exhibition book is a very special and unique book to add to your library collection.
The hardcover book with mustard yellow linen covered boards, embossed cover and spine titles, and dust jacket is published by The Los Angeles County Museum of Art and Abbeville Press Publishers, New York. Printed and bound in Hong Kong in 1990 on the occasion of the exhibition " The Fauve Landscape : Matisse, Derain, Braque, and Their Circle, 1904 - 1908 ".
It features an expansive survey collection of Fauvism landscape artworks, with compelling accompanied text authored by Judi Freeman, curator of Twentieth Century Art at The Los Angeles County Museum of Art, with contributions by Roger Benjamin, James D. Herbert, John Klein, and Alvin Martin, foreword by Roger De Grey president Royal Academy of Arts.
In 1905 Henri Matisse, Andre Derain, Maurice De Vlaminck, and Georges Braque exhibited their highly innovative paintings at the controversial Salon D'Automne. The vivid, unnatural colors led the art critic Louis Vauxcelles to name their work as " Les Fauves ", or " The Wild Beasts ", marking the start of The Fauvist Movement.
The first of the great aesthetic art movements of The Twentieth Century, Fauvism was linked by friendship, a coherent aesthetic, and preference for high-keyed color and simplified forms. The Fauve artists frequently explored the same sites together, sometimes painting side by side. The landscapes that predominated in the works of The Fauves and inspired many of their innovations are the focus of this thought-provoking book.
The remarkably diverse images - seascapes, riverscapes, town and cityscapes, have been carefully selected from important public and private collections to illustrate the range and inventiveness of the Fauvist approach to nature. The author's research and incisive scholarship illuminate these vivid images and careers of the artists who painted them.
This is a beautiful book with an elegant design that is enlivened with more than 200 vibrant reproductions in full-color as well as numerous postcards, maps, photographs of the artists, and many other documentary illustrations. This landmark volume captivates with its original ideas and color-drenched images.
The rare out of print 1st edition, 3rd printing hardcover art exhibition book measures 10 3/8" W X 11 1/4" H X 1 1/2" D, with 350 pages. It features 345 illustrations, including 210 in full-color.
It is in excellent " like new " clean vintage condition consistent with age and light signs of handling. Please see photos for condition reference. It is now being offered here for an excellent price. less
