An abstract expressionist landscape oil painting on masonite, titled Summer #17, by Bay Area artist John Magill. Vibrant colors married with a controlled impasto technique add a wonderful mood and movement to the piece. Signed lower right corner—John Magill. The frame appears to be a one of a kind made for this piece, possibly by the artist. The wood frame has a rustic faux finish while the "lining" is painted wood. Zoom in on photos for detail.
JOHN MAGILL studied in Paris at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere, in Madrid at the famed Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, and at the California School of Fine Arts (today the San Francisco Art Institute). He traveled extensively in North America; his exhibition sites include the Delgado Museum of New Orleans (today the New Orleans Museum of Art), the Frye Art Museum in Seattle, and the California Palace of the Legion of Honor (today the Legion of Honor) in San Francisco.
