American, 1940s, aluminum hand-wrought and tubular construction cart with lift-out trays of foliate motifs, and inset accoutrements, on wheels, trays stamped "Hand Forged Everlast Metal". The accoutrements and trays breaking down in pieces, the cart itself folding flat.
Created in 1940 for the Metropolitan Museum "Art and Industry" exhibition, this wonderful cart has a real artistic flair. Commissioned by the Everlast Metal Productions Corporation of NYC, American designer Russel Wright envisioned this cart with his wife Mary. She is credited with the graphic etched leaf designs, and the cart is referred to as the "Falling Leaves" pattern. This rare cart has all but the salt and pepper shaker aluminum elements intact. The two larger containers have double walled bodies for insulation, keeping items hot or cold. The smaller containers include an open gravy dispenser, and two covered condiment containers (with original spoon). There is also a holder for wine bottles. All elements are removable for serving and easy cleaning. The cart has a crafted feel with all the hand - hammered surfaces and joinery. The trays are well marked with the Everest stamp on the undersides.
Wright and her husband Russel Wright co-founded the design business, Wright Accessories Inc., where she served as vice-president, factory supervisor and oversaw publicity, marketing, and promotion. She was a founder of America Designs Inc., an organization that supported the works of American industrial designers. Mary Small Einstein Wright (December 13, 1904 – September 15, 1952) was an American designer, sculptor, author and businesswoman who worked to "shape modern American lifestyle".
