There is some wear and fading on the cover illustration as well as some wear to the blue cloth exterior of the book, including the four corners of the front and back covers. The wear is consistent with the book's age and use. It looks to be a cherished family book that was enjoyed with respect by several generations. The interior illustrations are in very good condition and the colors are vibrant and eye catching on the 4 full color interior plates. I've tried to capture the condition of the book in the photographs so please review all carefully and zoom in for details. Feel free to ask questions. less

What makes the 1925 edition of this children's classic so enjoyable are the marvelous colored (and black and white) illustrations by Clara Burd. which make the book as enjoyable to look at as it is to read.
Set in 19th century Netherlands, this classic children's story, by Mary Mapes Dodge, an American author is a morality tale about the power of good deeds. The hero of the story, aDutch boy named Hans, forgeights an ice skating race to help a needier boy win the monetary prize. Han is rewarded for this selfless act when, moved by the boy's actions, a doctor has a change of heart and decides to treat Han's sick father which ensure happy endings for all.
What really drew American children (and their parents) to the book was the introduction of the exciting sport of speed ice skating on the frozen canals of Holland which is where the silver skates of the title come into play.
