Keith Haring ( 1958 - 1990 ) was an incredibly vibrant American artist and social activist who's artwork responded to the 1980's Street culture by expressing concepts of birth, death, sexuality, and war. haring's work was often heavily political. His imagery became a widely recognized vivid and iconic visual language of The Late Twentieth Century. Haring's close friends and inspirational contemporaries included Andy Warhol, Jean Michel Basquiat, and Madonna all of whom he collaborated with in his lifetime. Artworks by Haring are included in the collections of many of the world's most prestigious museums.
The " Barking Dog " is one of Haring's most iconic symbols, first appearing in his New York Subway Drawing Series from 1980 - 1985. During this time he would draw with chalk on matte black paper, and post the drawings over expired subway advertisements. Allowing him to fulfill his intentions of making art accessible for as many people as possible, while also conveying his social messages.
Traditionally the image of a dog represents loyalty, companion ship and obedience. For Haring it emerged in contrast as an image for people to question their perception using their inner and outer voices to think critically. The Barking Dog is prominently positioned throughout his overall oeuvre.
