A very unique and rare equestrian themed pitcher
Custom made by Doulton Lambeth, salt-glazed commemorative Motto-type jug honoring the life of the renown Australian jockey John "Cutts" Dillon and his horse Archer
In the center there is a molded in relief medallion of Cutts, surrounded by laurel wreath and other symbols of his trade, such as a sadle
A text, a poem, on both sides of the image reads: Reft from our midst by untimely fate pledge me his spirit before we sip,/ Pledge me one who through life was straight,/ Straight as he rode for the plate or cup. / Ah! Death's pale Horse must have felt elate / As he sped trough the shadows with "Archer Up"
The spout is shaped as a jockey cap, the handle is decorated with bridle and horse ropes
The jug was made for retailer John Mortlake of Oxford Street, London with impressed marks to the base
Circa 1872-1880
During his long career John (Johnny) "Cutts" Dillon (1829-1872) was one of the best known, best liked and most respected jockeys in New South Wells, Australia. In 1861 he rode Archer (1856-1872) an Australian Thoroughbred racehorse, the winner of the first Melbourne Cup. It 1862 the team won the Second Melbourne Cup along with many other significant victories.
The horse past away just a few months after Johnny
The pitcher, in addition to presenting a very unique and interesting horse racing memorabilia, has a great collecting value as one of the important and rare pieces of late 19th century Doulton Lambeth pottery
A sticker from the important Harold Luterman collection remains attached to the bottom
