A very unique and rare equestrian themed pitcher
Custom made by Doulton Lambeth, salt-glazed commemorative Motto-type jug honoring the life of Fred "The Tin Man" Archer, the most famed jockey of his time
In the center there is a molded in relief medallion of Archer, surrounded by laurel wreath and other symbols of his trade, such as a saddle
A text, a poem, on both sides of the image reads: Reft from our midst by untimely fate pledge me his spirit before we sip,/ Pledge me one who through life was straight,/ Straight as he rode for the plate or cup. / Ah! Death's pale Horse must have felt elate / As he sped trough the shadows with "Archer Up"
The spout is shaped as a jockey cap, the handle is decorated with bridle and horse ropes
The jug was made for retailer John Mortlock & Co. of Oxford Street, London with impressed marks to the base. Also marked with incised in the clay initials of the artist MP or MR
Circa 1886, the year Archer passed away
Frederick James Archer (1857-1886) also known by his nickname "The Tin Man" was a flat race jockey of the Victorian era, dubbed "the best all-round jockey that the turf has ever seen" with 2748 total race wins, holding the record Champion Jockey titles for 13 consecutive years
The pitcher, in addition to presenting a very unique and interesting horse racing memorabilia, has a great collectable value as one of the important and rare pieces of late 19th century Doulton Lambeth pottery
A sticker from the important Harold Luterman collection remains attached to the bottom
