This is an early 1835 dated Ridgway blue Jasperware 7"tall size pitcher with wonderful detailed molded relief Tam O'Shanter scenes.....It tells the story based loosely on Douglas Graham of Shanter, Ayrshire (1739-1811). It seems that he liked to drink and flirt with the ladies when he went into town. The series of scenes shown "Tam" lighting his pipe from a fireplace while his dog watches him....next scene has a bar maid (or witch) pouring ale from a pitcher into Tam's mug, while the dog is curled up asleep under his bench....then the final scene has him riding off on his horse trying to escape a witch who has ahold of the horses tail...a ring of Scottish thistles around the pitcher, along with fancy decorations.....ornate molded handle with arm/hand grasping a vine...footed base with sunken bottom that is impressed PUBLISHED BY W.RIDGWAY & CO HANLEY OCT 1 1835 ....blue jasperware.....7"tall, scarce large size....
The jug/pitcher would have had a pewter lid in its previous life. A striking piece of history and beautiful unique "blue" presence. less
