Although constructed circa 1815 as a scientific instrument, this French giltwood barometer is a beauty to behold. Our exquisite barometer has a unique composition, featuring an elongated hexagonal barometer face that is topped by a stylized lyre. The lyre is adorned by a split rosette with intricate foliate tendrils, but the eye-catching element is the “strings” that are comprised of an Apolline thermometer, marrying form and function seamlessly.
Surrounded by an intricate leafy border and thick molding embellished with volute rinceaux, the barometer housing itself is a work of art. The foliate theme continues on the white barometer face, with a rinceau above and below the central gauge. An undulating gnomon stands proudly atop a large golden leaf, both encircled by concentric rings, each delicately separated by gilded borders. Two rings of pink inlay, festooned with golden leaves, surround a green inlay with gold lettering used to indicate prevailing weather. Antique barometers are no longer used as reliable scientific instruments, but their beauty is still appreciated by discerning collectors who use them as decorative wall accessories in kitchens, hallways, or libraries. less
