Bernard Buffet ( 1928 - 1999 ) was a French painter, printmaker, and sculptor. An extremely prolific artist, he produced a varied and extensive body of work. His style was exclusively figurative and is often classified as Expressionist or Miserabilist. He enjoyed international acclaim in the 1950's and was often compared to Pablo Picasso or his fame and talent. By the age of 21, Buffet was already considered one of the greatest stars of the art world, and named one of The " Fabulous Five " cultural figures of Post-War France ( the other four were Brigitte Bardot, Francoise Sagan, Roger Vadim, and Yves Saint Laurent ).
Among the subjects he chose were of religion, landscapes, portraits and still lifes. His work was characterized by thick black lines, elongated forms, and a lack of depth of field. In The 21st Century there has been a renewed spike of interest in the work of Buffet, his oeuvre is particularly popular in Europe and Asia. Corresponding with this interest, Buffet's work has broken previous auction records.
The venerable famous printing house of Imprimerie Atelier Mourlot Paris was founded in 1852 by The Mourlot Family. It is known worldwide for its fine art lithography printing, and one of their most important contributions was to be the art poster. Mourlot became the place where posters were prepared and produced as works of art in their own right.
When The Mourlot Studio opened a branch in New York City, after a successful exhibition organized by The Smithsonian Institute in 1963, it commissioned several famous international artists to create a series of original lithographic posters to celebrate the event.
Bernard Buffet, on the heels of his success with The New York Lithographic Album of 1964, was asked to create an original image. The studio was part of The Westbeth Complex, a newly built, city-funded artist residence in The West Village. The artist settled on this unusual view of the building while taking a boat ride on The Hudson River. This extremely well balanced composition is one of Buffet's most sought after lithographs.
