Each white plate is painted with a different fish, with assorted backgrounds. Each piece is completed with a nice gilded edge in gold.
Plates measure 9 3/4" in diameter.
On the back of each plate are two marks; the original black mark and the yellow and green ‘overlay’ mark.
• The black mark identifies the company that produced the ‘blank’ plate. Blank plates were sold to the studios and decorated.
• The overlay, green shield, outlined in yellow, is the mark of Porzellanmalerei Parbus (PP), a small decorating studio in Oberkotzau, Bavaria, Germany which opened in 1904.
-The studio would obtain a set of blanks, create and apply the designs you see and overlay the makers mark with the green and yellow shield on the reverse before sold.
-Leni Parbus started decorating porcelain as a hobby, opening/running the Porzellanmalerei Parbus studio until her death in 1955.
-The word 'Bavaria' indicates that the set was originally sold locally in Bavaria and was not intended for export. Later sets made for export were marked "Imperial" or "Export."
-Based on the mark of 'Bavaria' and 'Germany,' these are likely pre-WW2 as post-WW2 pieces were marked 'Made in Germany.'
-Leni's son (B-1939) later operated a studio until 2005, but when he started or what marks he used are unknown..
Provenance:
Family wedding gift received in the late 1960s; from a Westport CT family. Plates have remained in the box since.
