Frank Stella ( B. 1936 ) is an American painter, sculptor, and printmaker noted for his work in the areas of Minimalism and Post-Painterly Abstraction. Working since the 1950's, Stella has created a Modernist style Abstraction and singular creative aesthetic voice that is unique unto himself. Stella's artworks were the subject of a major solo retrospective exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York in 1970. His artworks are held in the collections of many of the world's most prestigious museums.
The Sinjerli Variations artworks are from Stella's " Protractor Series " he began in the lte 1960's, painting bright curved bans of color on large canvases to resemble the semi-circular shapes of protractors. With bold rainbow palettes, the series marked a creative turning point for the Minimalist artist. Stella was inspired to experiment with circular curves after a 1963 trip to Iran left him fascinated by the rounded and brightly colored patterns of Islamic Art, and the historic cities with circular plans. He titled the artworks after ancient cities in The Near east. Sinjerli was a city of the ancient Anatolian people in The 14th Century BC located in southern Turkey.
