Josef Albers ( 1888 - 1976 ) was a German born artist and educator whose work, both in Europe and The United States formed the basis of Modern Art education programs of The 20th Century. Albers was a student at The Bauhaus in 1920, later being invited by the founder Walter Gropius to become an educator at the school. There his students included established artists Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee.
In the 1930's Albers emigrated to The United States where he would become the head of the new art school Black Mountain College, and later in the 1950's he became head of the department of design at Yale University. His students in American included Robert Rauschenberg, Cy Twombly, Richard Anuzkiewicz, and Eva Hesse among others.
Accomplished as a designer, photographer, typographer, printmaker, and poet, Albers is best remembered for his work as an Abstract painter and invaluable contributor as an art theorist of color theory. He is considered to be one of the most influential visual artists of The Twentieth Century. Artworks by Albers are included in the collections of many of the world's most prestigious museums.
When Ernst Beyeler renamed the art and book shop that he had been running for several years to the " Galerie Beyeler " in 1952, he laid the foundation for a unique career as an art dealer and collector. The most important modern artists were represented at Beyeler. The exhibitions were not only well attended by local visitors, but also by international travelers. The high level of curation and expertise that was cultivated in the Galerie Beyeler art works, was also exemplified in their fine art exhibition posters of that time, such as this Josef Albers exhibition poster print.
