Offered is a mid 20th Century studio pottery artist-signed flaming ("flambé") drip-glaze stoneware "chimney" bud vase with 5 spouts created by Leah "Lee" Levy (1922 - 2011).
Born in Pinsk (formerly in Poland, now in Belarus) she emigrated and joined her father in the United States in 1929, growing up in Brookline, Mass.
She married in 1944, and while raising her family on Long Island, NY, Lee and her husband, Irving, began a production pottery business and during the summers, at the Alfred University School of Ceramics, the couple trained with some of the foremost potters in America of the era.
In the 1970s they moved to Rhinebeck, NY and their pottery studio sold to craft stores throughout the US. Mrs. Levy was instrumental in establishing the Rhinebeck Crafts Fair. Later she turned her talents to bead jewelry and stained glass.
An example of her work dating from the 1960s and 1970s, this one is dipped in earthy red, creamy-lavender and shades of purple with hints of blue, and the vase can stand alone as a decorative object, or be used to arrange cut flowers, and measures approximately 5.5" in width, has a round base that is 4.25" in diameter, and is 6" at its highest spout. less
