These Gurhan earrings feature an elongated briolette cut smoky quartz drop, wrapped with hand hammered 24k gold. Th earring’s dangle is decorated with a diamond flower, bead set into 24k gold—an inverse of the gold and white circular motif that it is suspended from. The top piece is reminiscent of a sun, and the hand hammered gold catches light nicely and facets off beautiful patterns. Each earring contains 25 single cut diamonds that add a wonderful sparkle.
Like all Gurhan pieces, these earrings were made in Turkey. Gurhan pioneered the return of pure 24k gold into contemporary jewellery. Because 24k gold is so soft, it is ideal for hand hammered texture, and these earrings are a lovely example of the hand hammered technique often found in Gurhan’s pieces. Gurhan begins his process at the jeweller’s bench, instead of beginning with a sketch, which contributes to the organic spontaneity indicative of a Gurhan design.
The back of the earrings have the Gurhan maker’s mark, a model number, and the year 1990. Because these earrings were made in a limited run, each piece is signed and numbered.
The gold found in the dangle and top parts of the earrings are 24k gold, while the white gold decorations and yellow gold posts are all 18k. There are 50 diamonds in total, equalling approximately .4 of a carat total diamond weight. The diamonds are single cut, measuring 1.25 mm; the two central diamonds are slightly bigger. Combined, the earrings weigh 6.22 grammes. They are 1 5/8” long and 3/8” thick.
