It features an iconic photo image of Andy Warhol and Jean Michel Basquiat by photographer Michael Halsband.
This a rare opportunity for true Warhol and Basquiat fans and collectors both as this coveted original 1st printing exhibition poster print, the most historic, enduring and popularized image of the 1980's New York art scene is long out of print and very scarce to find. The poster is among the most sought-after Warhol/Basquiat collectibles in existence, considered by many to be the " Holy Grail " of Basquiat ephemera.
Andy Warhol ( 1928 - 1987 ) and Jean Michel Basquiat ( 1960 - 1988 ) first met in 1982 and their collaborative work really began a couple years later. At Basquiat's dealer, Bruno Bischofberger's suggestion, Warhol and Basquiat began a series of collaborative paintings, after what amounted to the brotherhood of the traveling canvas between Basquiat, Warhol, and Italian artist Francesco Clemente.
The three artists continued this experience between them for about a year, and in late 1984 Warhol and Basquiat began secretly collaborating on their own. Warhol was inspired by Basquiat's energy and youth and Basquiat had always idolized Warhol. During the collaborations, Warhol would usually be the one surprisingly to begin the painting. He would often silkscreen a recognizable logo or product on to canvas, which Basquiat would promptly write or paint over, leaving his own trademark graffiti style on the work, creating a dialogue between the two personalities and aesthetics of each artist.
Tony Shafrazi ( B. 1943 ) New York gallerist and art dealer, a force of nature, has been a pivotal voice in the art world for over half a century. Known for his groundbreaking partnerships with such renowned artists as Keith Haring, Jean Michel Basquiat, Andy Warhol and many others. Shafrazi's impact on the vanguard of art world trends is unparalleled among his peers. Cultivating very close relationships, these artists were not just friends or colleagues, but his extended family. Tony Shafrazi's influence would significantly shape various artist's careers, and The New York Art Scene along with them.
In 1985 photographer Michael Halsband was invited to a dinner held by Warhol in the back room of a restaurant, where he was seated next to Jean Michel Basquiat. Basquiat told Halsband that he had been a fan of his work for years. Later, Basquiat asked Halsband if he would photograph the poster for his and Warhol's upcoming collaborative exhibition at The Tony Shafrazi Gallery, mentioning that they wanted a boxing theme poster.
When Halsband agreed to the project, Basquiat told Warhol of Halsband's involvement. warhol reminded Basquiat that they had already asked Robert Mapplethorpe to photograph the poster, but Basquiat insisted that Halsband would do it Thus began the story of the creation of one of the most iconic portraits of the two artists and lasting evidence of their friendship and competitiveness.
It remains as a reminder of the collaboration and relationship between two of The Twentieth Century's most recognized and collected artists, and has become one of the most iconic portraits of these two legendary figures.
