The jute clipper Slieve Roe at sea oil on canvas 59 x 90cm The three-masted iron full-rigger Slieve Roe official number 78862 registered in Liverpool was ordered for the famous Sinclair fleet of so-called ‘colonial clippers’ owned by James Sinclair of Tyrone, Ulster. Built by Harland & Wolff yards number 115 and 110 at Belfast in 1878, she was registered at 1,749 tons gross (1,668 net) and measured 257 feet in length with a 38½ foot beam. The last of three identical sisters, Slieve Roe proved the fastest of the trio although it was said at the time that the ‘Slieves’ were the finest sailing ships ever to be launched from Harland & Wolff’s yards. On a passage out to Calcutta in 1883, Slieve Roe raced 1,500 miles in five days and averaged 16 knots for one stretch of 23½ hours. Sold to Simpson Bros. towards the end of the century, her successful career continued when she set a 28-day record between Melbourne and Callao (Chile) under their colours and remained in service with them until broken up in 1910.
