Andy Warhol ( 1928 -1987 ) is one of the singularly most well known Contemporary artists of all time. His imagery is recognized worldwide. His infamous life, artworks, and creative endeavors are like no other artist. He is credited as the very first artist to use common everyday objects and view them in a completely different way while paying homage to their role in our society. His technique utilizing a silkscreen method combined with hand finishing in a signature palette of vibrant color hues make the work stand on its own and loved by millions.
Muhammad Ali born Cassisus Marcellus Clay Jr. ( 1942 - 2016 ) was an American professional boxer and activist. Nicknamed " The Greatest ", he is regarded as one of the most significant sports figures on The 20th Century and is often considered the greatest heavyweight boxer of all time. He held The Ring Heavyweight title from 1964 to 1970. He was the undisputed champion from 1974 to 1978 and The WBA and The Ring Heavyweight Champion from 1978 to 1979. In 1999, he was named Sportsman of the Century by Sports Illustrated and The Sports Personality of the Century by The BBC. Muhammad Ali's global impact as an athlete, orator, and social activist made him a monumental Pop culture icon.
Warhol photographed Ali for the first time in 1977 as part of his Athlete Series. This group of works features sports stars of the era including golfer Jack Nicklaus, soccer hero Pele, and basketball legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. The project was initiated by the art collector and sports enthusiast Richard Weisman. The stars of sports were a natural subject for Warhol and his preoccupation with fame and celebrity status.
Warhol's portrait of the boxer captures the essence of Ali, with his raw power and focus highlighted in the composition's clenched fists and fixed stare. The result is an extraordinary portrait of a Pop icon, a god of The Modern Age, a Contemporary hero. A legend worthy of Warhol's oeuvre.
