The metal bronze straps wrapped around the body is designed to allow the wood to breathe. You can notice that 2 of the 8 seams have a gap. This is because once the weather becomes cooler, the wood is drier and it shrinks. In a more humid and warm temperature, the wood will expand and the gaps are not so wide. The top piece used to have a key, but long ago has been lost. We love the bronze lucky bat detailing on the top. See less
