A beautiful japanned Nichols & Stone chinoiserie desk and matching chair set. The desk itself is swoon-worthy with its painted traditional scenes of a forest and stenciled gold details. The front of the desk features nine drawer fronts, each with its own metal faux bois round handles. Each drawer face is painted with a different choinoiserie-inspired scene of birds, pagodas, and flora and fauna. The top of the desk is outfitted with a top that appears to be leather. However, it could also be faux leather, as it is hard to tell. The edges are decorated with a stylized gold stencil design.
The desk is accompanied by two matching chairs also by Nichols & Stone. The chairs are by the same brand, but from the Bicentennial Edition. The chairs are in the same japanned black hue, with gold stenciled details. Each chair's back is decorated with a different scene from early American history. One is marked, "Give me Liberty or give me death" - Patrick Henry with Saint John's Church, Richmond Virginia Mar. 1775 below a depiction of the event. The second chair is labeled "Returning the Liberty Bell to Philadelphia - June 1778" below a depiction of the scene.
This set is a rare find, and in good condition for it's age. It does have scratching, and some chipping in areas. Very structurally sound, and would be fabulous for a study or bedroom in the traditional style.
Nichols and Stone is the oldest furniture maker in the United States and is now under the well-known Stickley brand.
The chairs are stenciled
