Top of the desk is designed to hold books if that is your want. Being only 28.5" wide, thus having a smaller profile, this desk is easy to fit in a variety of places in your home. It's a pretty terrific little American made desk and dates circa 1900

NOTE: The writing area is 29" high when open with the total writing area starting at the cubbies is 21" deep by 24" across.
