A vintage Tang Sancai style glazed terracotta trotting horse figurine. (circa 1950s, China) This figurative piece has a muscled horse as it's subject. The animal is depicted with its front forward left leg lifted and captured as if it were mid trot or a proud prance. It bares no harness, bit or bridle nor any reins only wearing an unstrapped saddle. Its mouth ajar as if having just whinnied. with a cocked head that allows the creature to appear happy and care-free. It has a classic allure that features a striking green and brown drip glazed in the Tang Sancai tradition over its off-white toned base clay. It bares a stamped signature that consists of 5 Chinese characters and is discoverable on the top surface of the flat base rather than the underside as might normally be expected.
FROM THE INTERENTREGARDING TANG SANCAI:
The production process of Tang Sancai is very complicated. First of all, the mined mineral soil must be selected, pounded, washed, precipitated, and dried, and then molded into a kiln for firing. Tang Sancai was fired using the secondary firing method. From the raw material point of view, its carcass is made of white clay. It is THEN bisque-fired at 1000-1100°C in the kiln. The baked carcass is cooled and then filled with various prepared glazes and put into the kiln. Glaze firing, the firing temperature is 850-950℃ during the calcining. less
