This is a rare collectible original poster illustrated and designed by Hilary Knight for The Dance Theatre of Harlem’s performances at The Apollo Theatre in June 2001. The founder and artistic director of The Dance Theatre of Harlem, Arthur Mitchell, began his career as a ballet dancer with the New York City Ballet under George Balanchine. He was the first African American to become a principal dancer, the first to achieve international stardom and was one of the most popular, known for his dazzling performances displaying a consummate technical mastery of the craft. George Balanchine choreographed ballets specifically for him. The assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. profoundly affected him and altered the course of his life. Compelled to create opportunities for the children of Harlem for advancement as he had had, he founded a ballet school and The Dance Theatre of Harlem the following year. The Theatre company rose to become one of the premier ballet companies nationally and internationally in the following decades. This vintage poster for their June 2001 performances at The Apollo Theatre features an original artwork by the renowned artist, illustrator Hilary Knight.
