A superb 1920s French Art Deco celluloid bracelet bangle. It features a light hollow tube shape with an Asian-inspired "chinoiserie" design around the bracelet.
The hollow bracelet technique is an ancient technique applied to jewelry at the turn of the 20th Century. The celluloid material came as a flat sheet, then cut by hand and painted, stained, or sprayed with paint. Then, each celluloid piece was heated around a wooden stick to form a tube. When the hollow tube was cool enough, it was re-heated round and sealed to close it and shape the bracelet. Thus, looking closely at the bracelet, you can see the seam on the inner edge and the seal on the circumference.
This bracelet is striking and unique. Its intricate design features gold and black colors over a bright red background.
The bracelet is in good condition, but there is a fold line (visible in pic 1), probably because the bracelet is hollow and not as strong as a plain bracelet.
Measurements: Inside across is 3 in diameter (7.6 cm) - outside across is 3.69 in diameter (9.4 cm) - width is 0.38 in wide (1 cm) - inner circumference is 9.06 in long (23.8 cm). It will best fit a Large wrist circumference, from 8 to 9.25 in (20.5 to 23.5 cm). Note you can wear this bracelet on the top of the forearm or the upper arm if your wrist is smaller. Flapper girls wore it like that in the Art Deco era.
Please see the measurements noted above in the description for the best approximate dimensions. less
