An expressive abstract screenprint on paper titled “Sticks #2” by Catherine Kernan. Hand signed in pencil on the bottom right and titled with an annotation 15/61 on the bottom left. Per the artist, “My visual vocabulary is one of fragmentation, interruption, reflection, and variation. Although abstract, the works are grounded in my direct observation of nature—specifically one lake in upstate New York that I have returned to my entire life, stimulated by the changeable perceptions of light on the water, foliage, and depths below the surface. Underlying is my belief that human relationships with the earth are dynamic and interactive, but also fragile.” From a private collection. Dimensions: 32.25”h x 26.25”w x 1”d (framed). In very good vintage condition.
Catherine Kernan was born in Cooperstown, New York in 1948 and grew up in many parts of the world. She attended Wellesley College, received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Cooper Union in New York City, and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Wisconsin/Madison. Ms. Kernan's work is regularly exhibited in private galleries across the country, national & international juried exhibitions, and invitational shows. Many private, and corporate collections own her work, as well as public collections, including: Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts, Boston Public Library, Grunewald Collection, New York Public Library, Library of Congress, Detroit Institute of Art, Davison Art Center at Wesleyan University, and the Fogg Art Museum. She has been awarded residencies at the Ballinglen Arts Foundation, Co. Mayo, Ireland (1992, 1993, 1994), the MacDowell Colony (1986) and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts (1989).
