Chinoiserie Chic meets laid-back luxury in this antique Chinese Peking rug. A variety of elegant floral motifs are dispersed across a tan colored field. Each of the floral motifs depicts a tree in bloom with four different types of flowers, while five of the composite motifs contain a bird perched in the branches. The four flowers intertwined in the motifs are lotuses, peonies, chrysanthemums and plum blossoms, which when appearing together represent the Four Seasons.
In this particular Chinese Peking rug, since the flowers all bloom from the same branch or tree, this may symbolize universal harmony and the everlasting cycle of nature. Separately, each flower carries significant meaning in Chinese culture. The lotus, the flower of summer, symbolizes purity and perfection, since its clean vibrant blooms emerge from the mud of swamps and marshes. Peonies, the flower of spring, represent unparalleled beauty and honor; they have long been regarded as a symbol of wealth. Chrysanthemums, the flower of autumn, are associated with long life and a golden retirement; the dried petals of the flower immersed in wine were once thought to bring longevity to those who drank it. Plum flowers, the flower of winter, represent fortitude and resilience, since the long-lived tree blooms brightly during the cold of winter. The four flowers appear in both borders as well: as a garland in the inner border and in vases in the main border. The main border also contains six coin motifs, which represent prosperity, while four of the coins contain the Shou character, which in Chinese means long life. Exuding sophistication and luxury, this gorgeous antique Chinese Peking rug would be a wonderful addition to any interior.
