Louise Nevelson ( 1899 - 1988 ) born Leah Berliawsky, was a Ukrainian born Jewish American sculptor known for her monumental, monochromatic, wooden wall pieces and outdoor sculptures. Nevelson's cubist inspired sculpted wood assemblages transcend space and transform the viewer's perception of art. The dramatically conceived constructions became world renown since the 1050's. She created her own visual language about myth and mystery with an interest in shadow and space, summing up the external world into a personal landscape. She is hailed and highly regarded as a pioneering artist and one of the leading sculptors of The Twentieth Century. Works by Nevelson are included in the collections of many of the world's most prestigious museums.
This special volume surveys the stylistic evolution of Louise Nevelson's wood sculptures over three decades. Wood is indisputably her medium. The exhibition and this book documents her remarkable use of this material. More than sixty works are beautifully illustrated. In addition, a number of photographs of the artist in her studio are included.
The rare out of print 1st edition Modernist art exhibition book measures 10" W X 8 1/2" H X 3/8" D, with 80 pages. It features 66 lithograph print illustrations, artist biography & bibliography, and catalogue list of the exhibition.
