Made of blond clay and … Read more This large, antique earthenware olive jar was created in Biot, Provence, Southern France, circa 1760. Made of blond clay and neutral in color, the terracotta vase has a traditional round bulbous shape. The rustic, time-worn pot features a pale mustard glaze around the rolled rim neck, embellished with the original blue tone painted finish throughout the body. There is a conveniently located hole near the base for drainage (see pictures for details). Overall, this tall Provincial yellow and blue ceramic jar is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, and adorns a rich, aged two-tone patinated finish.
In the south of France and especially in Biot (small village on the French Riviera), these olive pots are also known as the "king of jars," and were used to transport olive oil in the 17th and 18th century.
