A scarce pair of very fine quality antique Bohemian enameled light blue cobalt glass decanters, exquisitely decorated for the Persian market. circa 1890
Handmade in Bohemia (present day Czech Republic) in the late 19th century, home to the world's best glass artisans and painters, attributed to renowned luxury glass maker Moser Glassworks, the exceptionally executed decanters feature elongated steeple-form stopper resting in a gilded ring neck, the bulbous body elaborately decorated with decadent gold gilding and intricate, brilliant polychrome painted enamel floral, foliate and scroll patterns, surrounding a central portrait medallion, depicting Naser al-Din Shah Qajar (1831-1896), the Shah of Persia until his assassination in 1896. The ruling Imperial family was frequently admired in decorative arts which lead to the creation of Qajar art, referring to the art, architecture, and art forms of the Qajar dynasty, which lasted from 1781 to 1925.
These rare and magnificent examples are a bold representation of why Bohemian art glass is so highly sought after. Richly decorated in period Art Nouveau taste, the hand blown art glass, intricate enameling and opulent gilding is truly superb, with quality and detailing second to none.
