An extremely unique unsigned plaster table lamp that has several qualities that each make it extraordinary and in the top of its class. Mid-Century is the era and Hollywood Regency is the motif, the shape and inspiration is driven by the Greek architectural influence found in the great works of art that shaped the magnificence of the French Empire. For example, consider the "Order of Doric" fluted column that rises as a channeled pedestal from a stair of sloping steps that puddle at its feet to create a plinth that formulates the lamps' base. The Greek short pillar that is decorated in parcel gilt adds a scattered luster of gold leafing that concludes only when the abacus is reached or where the square post ends. Gold gives way to the first of several earth toned green hues starting with display a neoclassic Medici style flared rim vase. The rim of the vessel is designed with a wreath-like ring of symmetric olive toned petals that encircle it to form the vessels completion. From there a slender similarly toned green post climbs toward the sky only to find a floral ring located just below the horizon that finds an extraordinary jumbo sized barrel shaped synthetic (plastic or possibly fiberglass) lampshade. The outer part of the shade is finished in a mottling of olive green tone over a cloudy seaweed green with brown undertones that is rich in earth tone and is surprisingly sophisticated and fully opaque. The inside of the tall shade is painted in French goldenrod ochre tones and although not metallic it casts a warm light when the lamp is
illuminated. Also of interest and worth noting is the approximately 1" wide and 1/8" thick textured trim that surrounds the top rim of the shade similar to the vintage giltwood and gesso frame of many antique paintings. Shades with this style of trim are rarely seen and are difficult to find. The height of the shade also adds to its unique qualities. Take note of the finial which is proprietary to the lamps design and sits as the crown above the spider style shade framing. The avocado toned finial is carved like a turned wood spindle and is proportionate to the volume of the shade and is approximately 5" tall and 1/2 " thick and is the finishing touch to this delightful and collectable table lamp.
By all accounts, this lampshade rarely goes unnoticed by those who encounter it. Not only is it tall and bold but the one-of-a-kind rare gesso trim that crowns the top of the shade, adds to the understanding of why passersby often stop for a second view when finding the lamp.
Combined with the earthy green and golden tones we affectionately reference this lamp with the name, "the Jolly Green Giant". (unsigned circa 1970s)
dimensions: lamp is 8" wide adn deep and 31" from bottom to the top of the light socket without bulb
the jumbo shade is 14" wide at the top and 15" wide at the bottom it is 20 " tall less
