Decorate your fireplace or kitchen back splash with this elegant antique fire back. Crafted in France circa 1750 and almost square in shape embellished with an arched top, the ornate fireplace essential features a center medallion with the Royal Arms of France and the three Fleurs-de-Lys, and flanked with scroll motifs on both sides. The crest is surmounted with a king crown also decorated with Fleurs de Lis. The heavy and thick fire back is in excellent condition and adorns a rich polished black and silver steel finish. A wonderful addition to a fire place to reflect, spread and redistribute heat in the room, or to be placed as a back splash behind a stove. Weight 96 pounds.
The Fleur-de-Lis, also spelled Fleur-de-Lys, is a common heraldic charge in the shape of a lily (in French, Fleur and Lis mean 'flower' and 'lily' respectively). Most notably, the Fleur-de-Lis is depicted on the traditional coat of arms of France that was used from the High Middle Ages until the French Revolution in 1792, and then again in brief periods in the 19th century. This design still represents France and the House of Bourbon in the form of marshaling in the arms of Spain, Quebec and Canada, for example.
