Description: This antique French giltwood framed oval needlepoint firescreen was originally used to cover the opening of the fireplace during the … more This antique French giltwood framed oval needlepoint firescreen was originally used to cover the opening of the fireplace during the warmer months when the fireplace was not in use. It dates from the Napoleon III period, which puts this in the mid 1800's range. The oval giltwood frame has double sided ornamentation and a central cartouche of a needlepoint floral composition in a vase. The back of the needlepoint is lined with a compatible color of plain silk. The motifs are egg and dart, scoop patterns, acanthus leaves, shells, margents, husks and c-scrolls. The screen is supported at either end with acanthus leaf posts on double cabriole legs and scrolling feet. The large oval shape is a rare form to find in French firescreens. less
