Due to periods of historic turmoil, many of the glass designers worked for multiple lighting manufacturers. Entire sections of countries were annexed by adjoining countries. Borders changed. Czechoslovakia was under German occupation and rule. After the war, from 1948 to 1990, it became part of the Eastern Bloc. As a socialist and satellite state of the Soviet Union, it had an economy of command where rules, production … were determined and set by the government.
In 1958, Czechoslovakia exhibited in the Brussels World Fair and gained world -wide attention for using modern materials of steel, glass and plastic. The country even won the main and several other prizes for its lights. This new style of lighting became known as the Brussels style, a symbol of the golden decade of progress, reform and political liberation. But in 1968, the Warsaw Pact consisting of the Soviet Union, Bulgaria, Poland, Hungary invaded with the intention to forcibly halt the reforms. East Germany cancelled and pulled out of the pact hours before the operation.
