I suspect that the table's original color has been lightened at some point from a honeyed oak to a more bleached oak, which gives it a more coastal feeling. This two tiered table, manufactured by the Conrey & Birley Table Complany of Shelbyville, Indiana, 1884-1901, is an Eastlake style Knockdown table.
Eastlake style is named after Charles Locke Eastlake, an authority on furniture design, and
author of the influential book “Hints on Household Taste”. Eastlake wanted to move away from the overly elaborate and curvilinear style of the early Victorian Era and towards simple rectilinear forms. Eastlake Style is considered a precursor to the Arts and Crafts movement.
A label on the bottom of this table reads:
"This solves the problem of Knockdown construction. Put a little Glue in the slot. Drive (?) the leg up solid, and then put in the shelf. Don't forget the Glue."
Conrey & Birley Table CO.
There is also an ink stenciled "25" on the bottom of the table which is probably the model number.
The knockdown construction referred to on the label was a speciality of the company which required no tools or equipment to attach the legs to furniture.
