Jor Smith Michel creates works that are both personal and rely on his interpretation of familiar, over-saturated cultural references. He interacts with, re-frames, juxtaposes, and plays with icons and symbols drawn from various striking sources, from comics to celebrated artists, in order to create his own visual language. He is an abstract artist, who entered the art world to continue the traditions of functional artists that he had grown to admire. His intent was to focus on controversial art: sexual, political, philosophical, and word play compositions; things.

In adolescence, Jor Smith Michel created drawings for classmates for a dollar. Art came natural and his early commissions inspired him. At 12, Michel painted two 30’ murals and had an exhibition where everything sold.

He was one of eight or so artists featured in The New York Times 2016 article, “Hotels Aim to Stand Out With Local Art” by Martha C. White.

In 2018, the Andaz West Hollywood had an art exhibit that featured works by two of its employees, one being Michel. Andaz West Hollywood is Los Angeles' iconic Rock
'N' Roll hotel located on the famous Sunset Strip in West Hollywood where musical history, celebrity, and style come together. Previously, his work was featured in the Savannah Andaz Hotel art exhibit.
