These were my grandmothers plates and they truly mark an era. Grandma had a ton of Franciscan ware that she began purchasing in the 1940's.
I have such fond memories from childhood of waking up to spend time with her in the mornings. I often awoke to the delicious smell of toasting raisin bread. I would rub my eyes and in nighty and bare feet, pad down the hall to the yellow breakfast nook in her California sunlit kitchen. I would park myself in a chair positioned to watch my grandma at work making breakfast for the whole family as they slept cozily in their beds.
Grandma Ellie was a 1940's-elegant woman who wore her hair in a white Betty Grable up-do and never left her boudoir without full make-up and red lips. Her breakfast cooking ensemble was a pretty floral cinched waist dress and matching high heels. Around her waist she wore a frilly apron. In this ensemble, she tootled around the kitchen preparing her breakfast confectionary.
In her flurry she would stop for a moment and place before me a piece of raisin toast lovingly cut in two on the diagonal and slathered with butter. This delightful starter was presented on a small Franciscan ware apple plate. I ate my toast happily watching grandma work as I came awake to the new day. We tittered, and chimed, and chatted those mornings and with each bite more of the apples on the plate were revealed until I could see the leave and branches. It was magic.
These morning memories with Grandma will be treasured forever.
( She had a lot of Franciscan ware I have kept what I need the rest of all this happiness is for you dear customer)
