this is just a great original piece. I bought this painting because I thought it was really an incredible original early painting of the coast of monterey. This is just a classic site and scene painted by all the masters of california painting in the late 19th/ 20th century. I have shown this painting to a half dozen high end dealers in california paintings and all have agreed it is a high quality painting, and no one can figure out who the artist is, nor read the signature. The names mentioned that it might be or could be are robert wood (1889-1979), alexander harmer (1856-1925), meyer strauss (1831-1905), and frederick schafer (1839-1927). I wish I could figure out who the artist is, but regardless of who it is, the quality is outstanding.
This is a wonderful large oil on canvas measuring 22 x 36 inches. Painting is in excellent condition with just some minor surface grime. Lower right you can read 'coast of montere" and it says something underneath it that might be a signature. I am not exactly sure. I have included a second picture of this section of the painting with some highlighted contrast. Painting is on the original stretcher which leads me to believe that this painting dates to around c1885-1900 or so. The painting itself could be painted as late as c1925 but not exactly sure. It is also in its original gold frame that is the perfect compliment and ready to hang. Really an outstanding example of california school painting. Frame measures 27 3/4 x 41 3/4 inches. See less
