Toleware was developed in the early 18th century and was wildly popular and widely produced until the end of the 19th century.
It had a short-lived revival mid-20th century
Toleware takes its name from the French `tole peinte` (painted sheet iron). The tole was originally painted to prevent rust and therefore to preserve the items. Toleware is today experiencing a second renaissance among collectors and enthusiasts who love the look of these decorative objects. less
