A set of 8 elaborately carved Victorian era (c. 1890) American oak dining chairs in Renaissance Revival style with cabriole legs, large claw feet, graciously curved arms, fluted vertical frames with fancy scrolled crests between and upholstered seats and backs. The finish is the original dark oak typical of the period. The set includes 2 high backed armchairs also known as throne chairs and 6 side chairs in good condition but require restoration (regluing/reupholstery and repair of one seat - see photo). The armchairs are 45 inches high x 24.5 inches wide x 27 inches deep, with arm height of 28 inches and seat height of 17.5 inches. The side chairs are 39.5 inches high x 21.3 wide x 25 inches deep with a seat height of 17.5 inches. The existing dark red velvet upholstery is also typical of the period but has some spots and stains on the seats. Reupholstery is recommended, offering the new owner an opportunity to restore them to their original glory or give them an entirely new look. The set was purchased in 2001 from a respected dealer in Southampton, MA to go with a family heirloom dining table that had been passed down for several generations.
