Crashing waves: a painting by Virginia Lynn, oil on canvas, 20th century. Expert brushwork from this American artist shows the tide crashing upon basalt rocks near a shore. At first glance this painting is a tidy pastoral piece, but the ocean - vast in allegory as it is in scale - presents here a more profound entity: like a mirror, the viewer will project not only collective consciousness of the ocean, but also his related personal histories of the ocean. In this sense, this work is both serene and ominous, and everything in between: a stoic depiction of something so known and simultaneously unknown. Matted in black velvet and framed in gilt wood. Fabulous condition with virtually no signs of age. .
