Known originally as Defiance or Dissident, or Scoubidou Bottles, this is a vintage mid 20th Century liquor jug created in Hungary that is wrapped with woven telephone wire. As an act of rebellion in the 1950s and 1960s, citizens in several Eastern European countries commonly pulled down telephone wires to cut communication within the Communist government and then used the wire decoratively to protect their wine and liquor bottles, as well as for creating baskets and other objects.
Similarly, in the late 1950s, it was common to create these decorative jugs and bottles known as Scoubidous at eateries along the South of France, and it spread throughout the Mediterranean and became commonplace to display and sell them in Italy, Portugal, Spain, the Balkans, Greece, etc.
The pattern and technique are based on traditional basket weaving. The result, after many hours of work, is a unique and distinct piece of folk art.
This jug has a cork that says "Pannonvin Pécs", which is a Hungarian winery that operates in Aalborg, Denmark, but also happens to be the name of the original winery in Villány and Kisharsány, Hungary that has been operating for several centuries.
It measures approximately 8.25 in width to the edge of the handle, 7.5 at its widest, has a flat base that is 5" in diameter, and is 13.25" in height with its cork (and 12.63" uncorked). less
