These cups with their secure jacketed saucers were designed for people with weak hands or tremors. Similar cups has been used in China for centuries while they gained popularity in Europe in the 1690s. The decoration includes hand painted flowers and a basket holding a tropical plant, low relief basket weave, and gilding.
