Johann Baptist Homann (1664-1724, Nuremberg) was the most prominent and prolific cartographer of the 18th century. In 1702 he founded a publishing firm under his name. He produced hundreds of maps. His style is characterized with detailed engraving, elaborate allegorical cartouches and vivid hand coloring. Appointed as Imperial Cartographer by the Holy Roman Emperor Charles the VI, he had access to the most up to date cartographic information as well as to the "Privilege", an early form of copyright. Most of his maps printed between the 1715-30 have the inscription "Cum Privilegio". (ref.: geographicus)
