This is a traditional Kyodai, a vanity with adjustable mirror with drawers for storage. vanity / make-up chest from Taisho … Read more This is a traditional Kyodai, a vanity with adjustable mirror with drawers for storage. vanity / make-up chest from Taisho period (1910's-1920's). It was made for use standing on a Tatami mat. The lady would kneel in front of it to do her make up or someone would be doing it for her. The mirror was made to tilt for different angles. It can also be removed by adjusting the knobs that hold it in place. The wood used here is keyaki, Japanese elm, zelkova is the genus. It is a highly desirable furniture wood. To add interest to the piece, keyaki burl pieces with all the interesting patterns were used for the drawer fronts. Today it can be used as a vanity mirror on top of a dresser. See less
