This is a Mid-Century Modern Vintage Walter Sullivan Roche hand-crafted art pottery bowl. It is a natural terra cotta clay ceramic bowl with speckled tan/cream/brown glaze with a soft blue around the rim. Hand decorated with dot and linear motif in brown and terra cotta against a mottled beige background. The base has exposed terra cotta and the top has a light blue glaze at . The bottom is signed Roche and numbered 29. This piece has no chips or cracks. I do have a matching vase on another listing.
Walter Sullivan Roche (1922-1977) is recognized as a modernist studio potter of abstract forms and glazing techniques. He was born in Newport, RI in 1923 and after serving in the military during WWII he attended the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) where he was a student of Lyle Perkins. At RISD he earned a BFA in Industrial Design (1949). After working in Indiana as an industrial designer he and his wife (who he met at RISD) moved to Warner, NH in 1954, where he built a studio. Roche's pieces are known for their elegant but simple designs and glazes which are highly sought after. less
