If you’ve got a serious case of Mid-Century Modern madness, take a look at the designs of T.H. Robsjohn Gibbings. The British-born architect and furniture designer first started his career as a naval architect, where he designed the interiors of ocean liners. He continued on to work with one of the most iconic London-based antiques dealers, Charles Duveen. With such a solid foundation made in antiques, it’s no wonder that his designs were heavily influenced by classical forms. In 1929, he made the move across the Pond to work in Duveen’s U.S. office, and by 1936, Robsjohn Gibbings had established his own shop selling antique and contemporary furnishings. He also began to design interiors for the elite, including Elizabeth Arden and Alfred Knopf. Eventually, the Widdicomb Furniture Company in Grand Rapids, Michigan caught on to his designs and recruited Robsjohn Gibbings to be one of their designers. In 1960, he worked with Greek cabinetmakers Susan and Eleftherios Saridis to create the Klismos line, which is still in production today. T.H. Robsjohn Gibbings had a unique style: a mix of modern from Art Deco and classical from Ancient Grecian designs. You’ll often see motifs like mosaic floor reproductions, sculptural fragments, and lions’ paw feet in his designs, creating his overall signature modern historicism aesthetic. Today, vintage T.H. Robsjohn Gibbings are still very popular and in high demand. Luckily for you, we’ve got a large collection right here on Chairish!
