Born in 1922, George Mulhauser was one of the earliest founders of the now-classic, Mid-Century Modern design. With his inventive use of molded plywood, Mulhauser produced a series of striking chairs all with that iconic haute couture lounge look popular from the '60s through the '80s.The Mr. Chair, attributed to Mulhauser, is a swivel chair with a foam-cushioned seat and back, and a wooden, sculptured shell that contours the body. The chair's counterpart—the aptly named Mrs. Chair—has a similar look, but with more cushiony seats. Mulhauser made the seats for Plycraft, a boat manufacturer eager to break into the furniture industry. George Mulhauser also constructed the funky, colorful Sultana chairs for Plycraft. The arms and bases of the Sultana collection are dramatical swirls made out of plywood. Mulhauser's inventiveness did not end with chairs. It extended to tables, ottomans, and more, each with a distinct MCM feel, but with an added bit of edge.
