Highly unusual and unique pair of late 19th-century Neo-Grecian andirons and fender. Beautifully conceived and executed, and highly detailed. Parcel-gilt and patinated bronze. Each standard is conceived as a snake-entwined oil lamp (“lamp of wisdom”) on a columnar stand, on splayed feet over a pedestal base, with the connecting bar centered by a later addition of a rock crystal quartz orb. Both the snake and oil lamp were highly symbolic, and commonly represented, in the late 1800s Spiritualism and Occult movements.
