Georges Briard Signed hyalyn Pottery - raised gold decoration on a white porcelain vase.
In the early 1960’s, Georges Briard was commissioned to design modern shapes for a bisque porcelain line produced in white and earthtone colors.
A woman named Esta Huttner owned the Peerless Art Company in Brooklyn and had perfected a method of applying the raised gold decoration for Briard glassware. With her expertise, hyalyn was able to incorporate the raised gold onto their porcelain. The hyalyn designs, called “Midas” epitomized Briard’s sophisticated yet whimsical abstractions. These pieces are probably the most popular hyalyn collector pieces today. Bottom is marked hyalyn USA.
Georges Briard (May 17, 1917 - July 30, 2005 New York) was an American award-winning designer in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. He is most well-known for his signature dishware and glassware - everything from cups and plates to gold plated serving dishes. His signature collection was stocked at noted department stores, such as Neiman Marcus and Bonwit Teller.
Born Jakub Brodjo in Ekaterinoslav, he moved to Chicago from Poland in 1937 and adopted the name Yascha Brodjo. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago where he earned his MFA. He served in the U.S. Army throughout World War II and was discharged from the Army and started working in New York with Max Wille, whom he had met in art school. Brodjo began painting metal serving trays for sale, and evidently Wille came up with the name Georges Briard to mark commercial pieces – Brodjo was also a painter and would use his real name on his art pieces, but Georges Briard became his signature as a designer of these commercial articles, which were wildly popular and numerous. His notable designs were produced first by M. Wille Company, and later in a partnership with Philip Stetson.
In 2004, he was awarded the Frank S. Child Lifetime Achievement Award by The Society of Glass and Ceramic Decorators, in honor of his extraordinary contributions to the glass and ceramic decorating industry.
This sophisticated yet whimsically decorated vase is in excellent vintage condition, with normal & handling wear for its age. Color and raised gold are fully intact.

Orders where Free Local Pickup or Seller Managed Local Delivery were selected:
- Upon inspection, If you decide not to move forward with the purchase, you or your agent must refuse the item at the time of pickup/delivery from the seller
- Once you have taken possession of the item, all sales are final
- International, cross-border returns may require different processes depending on the countries between which the item is shipping to/from, and the buyer is responsible and duties (if applicable, on cross-border orders).
- On approved returns, the buyer is responsible for the full cost of return packing and shipping.
Cancellations
