About the period and jewelry boxes: Art Nouveau jewelry was created in France in the late 1800s and early 1900s, a time before the first World War, when mass manufacturing got its start and the absinthe was flowing. It was a short-lived period of design that focused on women and nature. Only select members of society wore the jewelry.
Art Nouveau had a major impact on jewelry boxes and marked a transition in design from the 19th century to the 20th century. Art Nouveau flourished throughout Europe and the United States and is characterized by its use of sleek lines and emphasis on purpose over form. This new way of looking at art symbolized freedom and again signified a return to nature. Jewelry boxes were beautifully ornamented with natural themes and floral motifs for a lighter and more feminine look.
